In order to assess the usefulness of A549, L-2, and AK-D cell lines as model systems for
alveolar type II cells, we compared their phospholipid composition to that of fibroblasts
grown under similar conditions. The percentage of disaturated phosphatidylcholine and
phosphatidylglycerol, key phospholipids of purified surface-active material, was the same in
epithelial cells and fibro-blasts. When A549 cells were maintained in serum-free media for
