Overview of the innervation of the lung

The autonomic nervous system controls many aspects of airway function, including
regulation of airway smooth-muscle tone, mucus secretion from submucosal glands and
surface epithelial goblet cells, vascular permeability and blood flow. Recent data suggest
that enhanced neural activity may play a key role in the symptomatology and
pathophysiology of airway inflammatory diseases.
